The economics of vaccines
Although vaccines have had an unparalleled impact on public health, they are a low priority on the drug development agenda of pharmaceutical companies. Patricia Thomas, a journalist who recently published a book on the hunt for AIDS vaccines, argues that several economic factors in the world vaccine market are undermining the interests of public health.

Also: Harvard microbiologist Dr. Lawrence Paoletti provides a researcher’s perspective on how to navigate the hurdles of bringing vaccine strategies from the lab into clinical trials.

Forget films, radiology goes digital at Harvard
This fall, first-year students at Harvard Medical School will be learning about radiology on a computer screen instead of x-ray films, just as many hospitals are. This technology trade off is largely due to the efforts of Harvard Macy alumna Dr. Kitt Shaffer.

Upcoming programs
Information and applications for 2003 courses are available online. A special pre-program session will teach international participants about the U.S. health care system and medical education. A symposium for Harvard Macy alumni will be held in September.
