A growing voice for education reform in Germany
Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich has been helping to lead a wave of change in how medicine is taught in Germany. In partnership with HMI, the students, faculty, and administration of LMU have led a series of educational reforms in the school’s curriculum that have spurred similar programs at other schools in Germany. Now LMU is creating a center of excellence in Munich that will serve as a non-governmental voice for reform in Germany and Europe.

Beyond drugs: an infrastructure for HIV/AIDS care in Ghana
The international medical community has become increasingly aware that bringing HIV/AIDS therapies to the developing countries that need them most is more than a simple problem of supply. HMI has begun working with partners in Ghana to help develop the foundation needed for better HIV/AIDS care delivery. As one participant noted, the workshop "will change my outlook and practice."

Taking a longer look at short-term medicine
HMI is helping a Harvard medical student study the broader impact of short-term medical missions in developing countries. Every year, hundreds of missions bring teams of health care workers who lend their time and expertise to care for patients in the developing world. Some of the missions provide routine medical care to rural populations, while others send surgeons into a city hospital to perform specialized procedures. So many short-term interventions undoubtedly have long-term effects on the local community, but currently there is no system to evaluate their success or track their impact.
