New leadership for HMI

Andrew A. Jeon, MD, MBA has been appointed Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of HMI. He brings to the position more than two decades of senior administrative and clinical experience, and a firm understanding of the international landscape of health care delivery and education.

“Known as a respected clinician and administrator, Andrew is a valued colleague in the Harvard Medical School community. His combination of health care industry knowledge and strategic acumen will be vital in guiding HMI forward,” said Jeffrey S. Flier, MD, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical and Chairman of the HMI Board of Directors.

Dr. Jeon succeeds Robert K. Crone, MD, who served as HMI’s founding President and Chief Executive Officer starting in 1994. Dr. Crone has been appointed a Managing Director at Huron Consulting Group, where he will focus on expanding Huron’s international service offerings to academic medical centers around the world. During his tenure at HMI Dr. Crone stewarded the development of HMI’s guiding principle that every citizen of the world should have access to quality health care of a world standard in his or her own community.

For the last 11 years, Dr. Jeon has served as HMI’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In this capacity he played a key role in developing and implementing the strategic direction of HMI and its programs, and helping to build HMI’s collaborative partnerships with institutions both abroad and in the Harvard medical community.

Dr. Jeon received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Vermont Medical School, and later earned a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. His postgraduate training in pediatrics and anesthesia was conducted at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

Prior to joining HMI in 1996, Dr. Jeon served in a number of leadership positions at Harvard Medical School-affiliated institutions. He was Chief of Hospital Services and Operations, Vice President of Surgical Services, and Director of the Operating Rooms at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He also held the positions of Director of Ambulatory Surgical Services at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Director of Ambulatory Surgery at the Boston Children’s Hospital.

Writing in HMI’s forthcoming Annual Report, Dr. Jeon noted that 2007 has been a year of transition and development for HMI and many of our partners. HMI is working with the Medical School to refine HMI’s strategy for the future. “We are very grateful for the support of the new Dean of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Jeffrey S. Flier, who is eager to build on HMI’s academic mission, and is also helping us to explore new models that will enable HMI to continue helping to plan and design health care systems and institutions to support patient care, education, and research.”

HMI has also announced that S. Bruce Dowton, MBBS, MD, FACMG, FRACP will fill Dr. Jeon’s former role as Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Dowton, who joined HMI in February of this year, is an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Wales in Australia. He served as Dean of Medicine at that institution from 1998 to 2005. He is also a past Chair of the Committee of Deans of Australian Medical Schools, the representative body for medical schools and faculties in Australia and the surrounding region.
