Hospitals see empowerment and flexibility as central to nurse retention strategies

The global shortage of qualified health care professionals is well documented. But it’s not just a numbers game challenging health care leaders to perform simple equations of supply and demand. Hospitals attempting to address the shortage of nurses are finding that focusing on retaining the nurses they have is likely a more sensible strategy than waiting for dwindling classes of fresh nursing school graduates to join the ranks. So, how does an organization go about developing an experienced and loyal nurse workforce? HMI World spoke with nurse leaders and administrators at hospitals with a reputation for nursing excellence about what keeps nurses not just satisfied, but committed.
